Tell NS&I through its official bereavement route and follow the current claim instructions. Requirements and response times can change, so use the official links and check the Last reviewed date before acting.
NS&I says the first step is to make a claim online and that you do not need to create an online account to do so.
This page provides general information and links to NS&I’s current guidance. It is not legal, tax, probate or financial advice. We cannot decide who is entitled to act for an estate, whether a Grant of Representation is required, or who is entitled to money or prizes. Check the current NS&I instructions and seek qualified professional advice if you are unsure.
Before you start
Use NS&I’s current guidance to check what information it asks for. Depending on the claim, NS&I may ask about the customer, their NS&I savings, the person making the claim and the authority to act for the estate.
Do not enter or send a Holder’s Number, account details, identity documents, bank details or estate information to this website. Use the official NS&I service.
This website does not pre-check documents, decide whether you can act, or tell you whether a particular Grant is required.
Submit or continue a bereavement claim
NS&I says an online claim is the first step and does not require a new online account. Use the official claim form linked from NS&I’s guidance.
If you have already submitted a claim, follow the instructions NS&I sends for that claim. This website cannot view, continue, update or track it.
Information or documents NS&I may request
NS&I may ask for information needed to identify the customer and the savings, contact the claimant, assess authority to act and arrange repayment. Its official guidance may also ask for original or certified documents depending on the case.
NS&I decides after receiving the claim whether it needs a Grant of Representation. Its current guidance says it may request one when total NS&I savings are £5,000 or more and can request one for savings of any value.
Do not treat £5,000 as a guaranteed no-Grant threshold. This website cannot interpret the requirement for an individual estate.
What happens after submission
NS&I will contact the claimant with the next steps and any further evidence it needs. Requirements can differ by claim, so follow that correspondence rather than relying on a generic checklist.
This site does not provide claim tracking, queue information, completion estimates or payment-status checks.
Current service status
Response times can change. Check NS&I’s current bereavement guidance and claims update for the latest position. This site does not provide a guaranteed timescale for an individual claim.
Do not treat updates about older affected estates as the processing time for a current or new claim. NS&I’s claims-update page and bereavement guidance are the sources to check for the latest position.
